The Recognitions - William Gaddis, William H. Gass This is a book that defies simple description. It is about religion, art, originality, commercialization, fraud, frauds, America, New York, sexual repression, identity, creativity, politics, truth and enough more to justify repeated readings.

Yes, it might be more work than some readers care to undertake; yes, it is labyrinthine, confusing and sometimes frustrating, repetitive and, perhaps, overlong. But there is much here to provoke thought, bring laughter, and open the mind, and I believe the rewards greatly outweigh the drawbacks.

And despite its length I missed it when it was over.
